Wine Pairing with Baked Spinach

5 Things to know about Pairing wines with Baked Spinach:

as recommended by Karen Bonarrigo & Merrill Bonarrigo

  • Spinach has a green, veggie, and herbal flavor. Additional greens like mustard, radish or beet give more complex vegetal flavors or spice.   Without additional seasonings on the greens, try lighter wines like Pinot Gris or Riesling.
  • If you add spice or heat in the flavors as in a salad dressing, try Gewurztraminer or Viognier.
  • If you add some fat like cheese or starch like bread, pasta or potatoes, try red wines.
  • In the Oven Baked Spinach balls recipe, there is cheese, starch and some strong seasonings so it complements red wines well. Try the Messina Hof GSM, Primitivo or Tempranillo.
