Trail of Wine and Food 2023  Maryland and Delaware

Spending five weeks together driving across America is a great test of a marriage. We have always done everything together – just not four hundred miles a day for so many days. The results were a stronger relationship, so many more memories together, shared delight in the God moments we witnessed, and a greater appreciation for the beauty of and freedoms enjoyed in America. This was our 2023 journey. We hope you will plan your own…

Annapolis, Maryland holds so many great memories for us. When our son Paul Mitchell went to school at the Naval Academy, we visited many times. It was great seeing Annapolis again and reminiscing of our times there with Paul Mitchell. Every time we went we would explore the restaurants in search of the best crab cake. This time we found a new restaurant since we were last there.  Boatyard Bar and Grill offered best crab cakes ever! 400 Fourth St., Annapolis, MD 21403. www.boatyardbarandgrill.com

We also went by the Jonas House where the Greens had hosted Paul Mitchell as a cadet in their adoption program. The Naval Academy encourages local families to “adopt” cadets to offer them a local contact and place to feel at home on the weekends. It gave us such comfort to know that Paul Mitchell had a connection. We even began offering adopt an Aggie connections for our friends and colleagues that had children at Texas A&M.

Annapolis is a quaint port side town that looks like a Courier and Ives painting. It is rich in restaurants and shopping areas.

From Annapolis we went to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where we spent time with Paul’s sister Rose and her husband Frank Holson. Dinner at P’s Pizza was just as good as any New York pizza.

Rehoboth Beach is a bustling tourist destination that extends the length of shoreline. We ate at Touch of Italy. 19724 Coastal Hwy, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971, www.touchofitaly.com – great deli with wonderful pastries and meats.

We had visited Nassau Winery many years ago and wondered how they were doing but had forgotten where they were located and ran out of time to visit. Then this morning a GodThing happened. We input our next destination, Geneva, New York, into our GPS and were driving along when the road closed. GPS rerouted us to another road. It too was closed for construction.

Finally, we drove a little further and found the next road that was open and took that road. Low and behold, there was Nassau Winery and Vineyard. Desire fulfilled.

The vineyard looked good. The hospitality center had expanded. It was Delaware’s 1st winery. They do fruit wines and grow American varietals. 32165 Winery Way, Lewes DE 19958, www.nassauvallely.com.
